Glycosyl hydrolase

Glycoside hydrolases are a widespread group of enzymes that hydrolyse the glycosidic bond between two or more carbohydrates, or between a carbohydrate and a non-carbohydrate moiety. They are extremely common enzymes with roles in nature including degradation of biomass such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and starch, in anti-bacterial defense strategies, in pathogenesis mechanisms and in normal cellular function.
